Deborah Gordon: How do ants know what to do? - TED Talks

Ant biologist Deborah M. Gordon has spent decades digging in the Arizona desert to decipher the chemical, genetic and behavioral codes of ant colonies.

Contrary to the popular notion that colonies have evolved into efficient, organized systems, she has instead discovered that the long evolution of the ant colony has resulted in a system driven by accident, adaptation and the chaos and "noise" of unconscious communication.

Her studies of the harvester ant have shed light on the evolution of aggregate systems, whether biological or virtual, and may someday yield clues tracing the evolution of the brain from neuron to cortex.

Saul Griffith: Hardware solutions to everyday problems - TED Talks

Innovator and inventor Saul Griffith has a uniquely open approach to problem solving. Whether he's devising a way to slash the cost of prescription eyeglasses or teaching science through cartoons, Griffith makes things and then shares his ideas with the world.

A proponent of open-source information, he established Instructables , an open website showing how to make an array of incredible objects. He is the co-founder of numerous companies including Squid Labs, Low Cost Eyeglasses, Potenco and Makani Power, where he is President and Chief Scientist.

His companies have invented a myriad of new devices and materials, such as a "smart" rope that senses its load, or a machine for making low-cost eyeglass lenses through a process inspired by a water droplet.

He is a columnist at Make magazine and co-writes How Toons! He's fascinated with materials that assemble themselves, and with taking advantage of those properties to make things quickly and cheaply.

Charles Leadbeater: The rise of the amateur professional - TED Talks

Charles Leadbeater's theories on innovation have compelled some of the world’s largest organizations to rethink their strategies.

A financial journalist turned innovation consultant (for clients ranging from the British government to Microsoft), Leadbeater noticed the rise of "pro-ams" -- passionate amateurs who act like professionals, making breakthrough discoveries in many fields, from software to astronomy to kite-surfing.

His 2004 essay "The Pro-Am Revolution" -- which The New York Times called one of the year's biggest global ideas -- highlighted the rise of this new breed of amateur.

Jimmy Wales: How a ragtag band created Wikipedia - TED Talks

Jimmy Wales went from betting on interest rates and foreign-currency fluctuations (as an option trader) to betting on the willingness of people to share their knowledge.

That's how Wikipedia, imagined in 2001, became one of the most-referenced, most-used repositories of knowledge on the planet, with more than one million articles in English (compared with the Britannica’s 80,000) and hundreds of thousands in dozens of other languages, all freely available

With a vision for a free online encyclopedia, Wales assembled legions of volunteer contributors, gave them tools for collaborating, and created the self-organizing, self-correcting, ever-expanding, multilingual encyclopedia of the future.

Open Source

Evelyn Glennie: How to listen to music with your whole body - TED Talks

In this soaring demonstration, deaf percussionist Evelyn Glennie leads the audience through an exploration of music not as notes on a page, but as an expression of the human experience. Playing with sensitivity and nuance informed by a soul-deep understanding of and connection to music, she talks about a music that is more than sound waves perceived by the human ear.

She illustrates a richer picture that begins with listening to yourself, and includes emotion and intent as well as the complex role of physical spaces -- instrument, concert hall and even the bones and body cavities of musician and listener alike.

J.J. Abrams traces his love of the unseen mystery -- the heart of Alias, Lost, and the upcoming Cloverfield -- back to its own magical beginnings, which may or may not include an early obsession with magic, the love of a supportive grandfather, or his own unopened Mystery Box.

Howard Rheingold: Way-new collaboration - TED Talks

Howard Rheingold talks about the coming world of collaboration, participatory media and collective action -- and how Wikipedia is really an outgrowth of our natural human instinct to work as a group.

As he points out, humans have been banding together to work collectively since our days of hunting mastodons.

Susan Savage-Rumbaugh: Apes that write, start fires and play Pac-Man - Ted Talks

Savage-Rumbaugh asks whether uniquely human traits, and other animals' behaviors, are hardwired by species.

Then she rolls a video that makes you think: maybe not. The bonobo apes she works with understand spoken English.

One follows her instructions to take a cigarette lighter from her pocket and use it to start a fire.

Bonobos are shown making tools, drawing symbols to communicate, and playing Pac-Man -- all tasks learned just by watching.

Maybe it's not always biology that causes a species to act as it does, she suggests.

Maybe it's cultural exposure to how things are done.

Emily Oster: What do we really know about the spread of AIDS? - TED Talks

Emily Oster, a University of Chicago economist, looks at the stats on AIDS in Africa -- and comes up with a stunning conclusion: Everything we know about AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa is wrong.

We look for root causes such as poverty and poor health care -- but we also need to factor in, say, the price of coffee, and the routes of long-haul truckers.

In short, there is a lot we don't know; and our assumptions about what we do know may keep us from finding the best way to stop the disease.

Gregory Colbert: Gorgeous video from "Ashes & Snow" - TED Talks

In a rare public appearance, photographer Gregory Colbert talks about the creation of his exhibit "Ashes and Snow".

Colbert's work, which he calls "a 21st-century bestiary," captures the poetic beauty in our relationship to the animal kingdom.

Colbert shows an 8-minute film, from the exhibit, of his epic swim with whales off the coast of the Azores.

He then announces his new initiative, the Animal Copyright Foundation, which aims to collect royalties from companies using images of nature in their ad campaigns.
