Phoenix - Run, Run, Run

Run, Run, Run

Business calls me, trouble down the waterfront
You know, I tried to,now I'm running outta lies
It's a clear view, when all you are is gettin' paid
No more favors, I know what we can do about it

I think I'd better run, run, run
I think I'd better run, run, run
You didn't catch me fallin', fallin', fallin'
Fallin',fallin', fallin'

Contradictions get me everything I want
I'll let you know but I think it's gonna take a while
It's a clear view, noone's waiting at the door
A million letters, they couldn't make me change my mind

I think I'd better run, run, run
I think I'd better run, run, run
You didn't catch me fallin', fallin', fallin'
Fallin',fallin', fallin'

How you want it to be, sittin' by the waterfront
I know I should be drifting far enough to reach the shore
It's a clear view, don't you underestimate me
No more flavor I know that I can live without it

I think I'd better run, run, run
& leave those things for someone else
But I liked it
I don't even care
If you got to play the game you got to do it well

When it comes to a cold, you might as well try goat entrails

Ben Goldacre
guardian.co.uk, Saturday November 22 2008 00.01 GMT
The Guardian, Saturday November 22 2008

I have a cold (and they're worse than you remember when you're well). Throughout the nation, homeopaths and self-declared nutrition therapists are celebrating. More importantly, I know that there is almost nothing I can do, except sit it out, and wait. Vitamin C will shave a few hours off it, at high doses, like 7g a day, which I can happily live without.

Although literally anything I try will appear, to me, to work: because unless I'm seroconverting with HIV (not that I'm prone to hypochondria) I will get better anyway. This is the natural history of the illness, and it's true with most things. When your back pain is at its worst and you visit your doctor - or your friendly local spoonbender - it's bound to get better, because these things come in cycles, or as statisticians say, they "regress to the mean". You can look at regression to the mean mathematically, if you like. On Bruce Forsyth's Play Your Cards Right, when Brucey puts a three on the board, the audience all shout: "Higher!" because they know the odds are that the next card is going to be higher than a three. "Do you want to go higher or lower than a jack? Higher?" "Lower!"

So I could take homeopathy. Or I could, equally stupidly, harass my GP for antibiotics, even though they are ineffective in treating a viral cold.

The Treatment Action Campaign congratulates Barbara Hogan

CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) -- South Africa's new health minister broke dramatically on Monday from a decade of discredited government policies on AIDS, declaring that the disease was unquestionably caused by HIV and must be treated with conventional medicine.

Health Minister Barbara Hogan's pronouncement marked the official end to 10 years of denying a link between HIV and AIDS by former President Thabo Mbeki and his health minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang.

Activists also accused Tshabalala-Msimang of spreading confusion about AIDS by saying she did not trust antiretroviral medicines and preferred nutritional remedies such as garlic, beetroot, lemon, olive oil and the African potato.

"We know that HIV causes AIDS," Hogan said in a speech Monday. It was her highest-profile public appearance since she became health minister two weeks ago after Mbeki was turned out of office by his party.

"I want to emphasize that we will scale up mother-to-child prevention programs," she said, referring to treatments using anti-retroviral medicine to keep HIV-positive pregnant woman from passing on the disease.

Hogan said government policies over the past 10 years had failed and said South Africa needed to do much more to improve access to anti-AIDS medicines.

How Did Animals Spread All Over the World from Where the Ark Landed?

"An issue often used in an attempt to beat biblical creationists over the head is the worldwide distribution of animals. Such a distribution, say critics, proves that there could never have been a global Flood or an Ark. If the Ark landed somewhere in the Middle East, then all the animals would have disembarked at that point, including animals that we do not find in the Middle East today, or in the fossil record in that area. How did kangaroos get to Australia, or kiwis to New Zealand? How did polar bears get to North America and penguins to Antarctica?

Not a Science Textbook

Skeptics often claim, “The Bible is not a science textbook.” This, of course, is true—because science textbooks change every year, whereas the Bible is the unchanging Word of God—the God who cannot lie. Nevertheless, the Bible can be relied upon when it touches on every scientific issue, including ecology. It is the Bible that gives us the big picture. Within this big picture, we can build scientific models that help us explain how past events may have come about. Such models should be held to lightly, but the Scripture to which they refer is inerrant. That is to say future research may cast doubt on an actual model, without casting doubt on Scripture.

With this in mind, the question needs to be asked, “Is there a Bible-based model that we can use to help explain how animals might have migrated from where the Ark landed to where they live today?” The answer is yes."

A Signature of the Creator

"What if we could see the signature of a Creator imbedded upon His creation? For years, the debate has raged: is there a God? How can we be sure? Christians are often confronted with the challenge of proving the existence of God. And yet He can be seen throughout the marvels of His creation. Romans 1:20 tells us that "the invisible things of him [God] from the creation of the world are clearly seen...by the things that are made." So can we really see an invisible God simply by looking around us?

The cuttlefish is a cephalopod which operates with such sophisticated technology that scientists today are struggling to understand just how this creature came to be. This creature is a perfect example of God's magnificent design, demonstrating stealth tactics, among other features, which include not only changing colors, but also texture, to blend in perfectly with its surroundings. If it is perched atop a barnacle-covered rock, it can conform to mirror the rock as well as the barnacles. But God's amazing creation goes further. The cuttlefish can perform this feat in a split second, and never even look at itself to examine its disguise. He does it by instinct. God is showing forth His glory through His creation.

If we see a painting, we understand there is a painter. Though we may not see him, we know he exists. If we see a complex space shuttle, we understand that this did not come about by accident. We understand that complexity demands an intelligent designer. The amazing thing is that this Designer has told us in His Word to examine His creation in order to "see" Him. And when we take a look, even at a humble sea creature such as the cuttlefish, we are amazed at the complexity and genius of His creation. In fact, when we look at something as amazing as the cuttlefish, in a way, we see God. And the last part of Romans 1:20 tells us that when we look at His creation and see Him, we are "without excuse" for not believing in a Creator."

God did It!!!

"Advances in science and cancer treatment emerged, not from science in isolation, but from a culture that made science possible and that directed the fruits of scientific work toward good and compassionate goals. The culture from which science has emerged is Judeo-Christian culture, and modern science has arisen only in Judeo-Christian culture. Why has science been so closely linked to this specific culture?

The scientific investigation of nature using the scientific method depends on the metaphysical view that nature is rational and that natural laws can be discovered and used by human beings. The Judeo-Christian understanding of God and of man’s relationship to God accords with these preconditions for successful science. The application of science to care for the sick presupposes the view that we have an ethical obligation to help the weakest among us. The atheist view of metaphysics — that the universe has no purpose and no designer and no transcendent ethical code — provides no impetus to scientific inquiry or to the compassionate application of scientific knowledge. Modern science arose in Judeo-Christian culture — a milieu of faith and prayer. It arose from Judeo-Christian culture — and nowhere else — for a reason.

Medical science is particularly in debt to a culture of piety.

There is no doubt that the simple tasks involved in the care for the sick — provision of food, water, shelter, and comfort — played a major role in the history of medicine. Even in the modern era of remarkable scientific achievements, such care is still essential for good medical outcomes, as any nurse or practicing doctor will attest. People are healed by the culture of medicine, not just by drugs or surgery, and that culture includes cutting edge science and basic humanitarian care. Both have deep roots in Western Judeo-Christian culture — a culture of faith and prayer."

Eu sei mais que deus

40 things God SHOULD have known:

1. The Universe began with light. (No Christians, God screwed up in verse 3 of Genesis because in verses 1 and 2 He already said He made the Earth and was hovering over "the waters" BEFORE there was light, and in verse 9 he said the world was first covered in sea, when it was too hot for puddle, and it wasn't until verse 16 that He made the stars, so just don't go there, ok?)

2. The light (energy) was too intense for anything else to exist.

3. Space expanded faster than light. Inflation, while still theoretical, is looking good).

4. Expansion reduced the energy density and allowed quarks to form.

5. All matter was formed from light/energy as per E=MC2.

6. Atomic nuclei remained "naked" for about 380,000 years after the B of the Bang due to the intensity of energetic photons (particles of light). After this point electrons were able to bond to atomic nuclei.

7. Accurate ratio of size between an atom and the Earth.

8. Vast (and I mean VAST!) clouds of the simplest atoms (mostly hydrogen) were able to gather under gravity.

9. At the core of such clouds, when massive enough, nuclear fusion began and emitted light.

10. Hydrogen atoms fuse to form helium releasing "unneeded" energy (light/heat) in the process.

11. Accurate numbers of stars per galaxy.

12. Accurate description of the shape of most galaxies (i.e., "discs").

13. Each galaxy separated.

14. Each galaxy moving apart from all others at speed.

15. Accurate description of the numbers of galaxies in the visible Universe
(though the actual number in existence will be far, far greater (but God/Allah didn't even mention ONE!).

16. Description of red dwarfs.

17. Description of blue giants.

18. The link between a star's mass, its light output and its life-expectancy (the rate at which it "burns" nuclear fuel).

19. The sequence of elemental "burning", from hydrogen (element 1) up to element 26 (with 26 protons), iron. Ordinary nuclear fusion cannot proceed any further as iron is too stable.

20. A star dies when it has fused all its silicon into iron. The end comes quickly, in tenths of a second, as the star, with no energy to "hold it up," collapses on its core. This is a supernova.

21. The collapse of the star briefly provides the energy to fuse heavy atoms, like iron, at the core into the less stable remainder of the table of chemical elements, up to element 92 (uranium) and beyond (the highly unstable plutonium for instance, at atomic number 94).

22. Chemical elements heavier than Hydrogen are produced in stars then spread out into the cosmos via supernovae.

23. The shockwaves from these events trigger the births of stars in "nearby", previously stable clouds of hydrogen gas, beginning the cycle again.

24. Second generation stars coalesced from the ashes of earlier stars and the first rocky planets formed out of the heavy elements produced by the first generation stars.

25. The "geography" of the solar system: The rocky, metallic planets of Mercury, Venus, Earth and Mars are to be found closer to the sun while the gas and ice giants of Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune are to be found further out.

26. The relationship between orbital speed and distance from the star.

27. Earth was formed 9 billion years after the Beginning.

28. Due to the relatively low temperatures on Earth when compared to the stars, elements can form chemical bonds and grow in complexity.

29. Asteroid bombardment of the early Earth ("mountains from the sky").

30. Chemical reactions proceed for approximately half a billion years before biogenesis occurs.

31. Chemical reactions caused by electromagnetism ("the law of the magnet and the lodestone").

32. Absorption of early (poisonous) atmosphere by early organisms to produce a breathable atmosphere.

33. The sky of the Earth tuned blue only after life had begun, 500 million years after the planet's formation.

34. Asteroid bombardment largely over by this time.

35. Mankind in existence 4,000,000,000 later.

36. The study of the "solid and the light", the interaction of light and matter, of forces and matter, leads to physics.

37. Prediction of the coming of telescopes, from lenses made from sand.

38. Prediction of astronomical objects unknown at the time of the Bible or the Quran.

39. Prediction of black holes and their ability to "withhold" light.

40. The world is a sphere (the Qur'an DID contain this information, but then, contrary to what many believe, it was common knowledge at the time due to Eratosthenes discovering it almost 1,000 years BEFORE the Qur'an was written).

Oh, and Allah said iron fell to Earth? Well, seeing as meteorites were well known LONG before then, and one sits at the heart of Mecca (the "Hadschar al Aswad"), and seeing as how Allah did not mention that the other 90+ elements also "fell from the skies", forgive me if I don't convert just yet.

Sir David Attenborough on God
